Ielts sample task 2 Band 8 - Discussion- Will education eliminate excessive consumption of junk food?

SAMPLE 46

Scientists agree that people are damaging their health by overeating junk food. Some people think that the answer to this problem is to educate people, while others believe that education will not work. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Scientists have concluded that consuming junk food is detrimental to human health. While some argue that education is ineffective in solving this problem, I would like to say that it is a workable solution to tackle such an issue.

On one hand, there are various reasons why educational programs might not be effective in the battle against junk foods. For example, the industrial lifestyle has caused people to be constantly in a hurry due to work pressure. People often choose fast food for lunch or dinner to save time despite potential health risks. Additionally, hamburgers or fried chicken are delicious and addictive dishes that have become popular, especially for children and adolescents who may not fully understand the health consequences of their eating habits.

On the other hand, educational programs could play a crucial part in preventing people from consuming excessive junk food. Firstly, these programs expose people to the various harmful impacts of this food. For instance, once people have gained adequate knowledge and awareness of life-threatening cancer and other diseases caused by overeating fast food, they are more likely to reduce the consumption of junk food. Secondly, education about nutritious diets at school can help children develop healthy eating habits and promote awareness of the benefits of healthy diets while warning them about the potential risks of fast food.

In conclusion, although there are many arguments against educational measures, I firmly believe that they play a vital role in mitigating junk food consumption and deterring the problem from being exacerbated further.
