Body 1: Agree to disagree – Formal/traditional exams have been a reliable measure of students’ intelligence.

 Passing formal examinations with high flying colours indeed shows signs of top-notch academic achievement. However, it fails to reflect the comprehensive measure of a student’s ability.

Body 2: Explain the missing factor- circumstances (family or health problems on the ex-final exam days.)

Formal examinations organized in “pen and paper format have long been traditionally given credits as the ultimate measures of a student’s academic performance. However, their accuracy has been recently debated. In my view, although traditional test formats have their merits, they fail to reflect/ test the overall learning capabilities. (48w)


Pen and paper test formats are largely recognized as useful for evaluating a student’s competence. To succeed in these tests, students must absorb all the knowledge and skills and demonstrate them effectively under time pressure. Throughout the school term, students must work hard from researching documents to reviewing their knowledge before applying it through regular quizzes or small tests, which enables them to perform well in the final exams. However, even this is not enough to interpret the whole spectrum of a student’s academic success. -( 85w)


Therefore, it is essential to consider other external factors when evaluating a student's academic intelligence. Some students are not entirely exam-intelligent while others may suddenly face some health or family problems on the final test days. A failure to carefully review and scrutinize all the factors would yield a less reliable evaluation of a student’s academic performance. - 57w


In conclusion, formal exams are useful tools for measuring students’ performance, but they should not be the sole indication. A more extensive assessment of their learning process and potential should always be indispensable. 37w
