crime results from social problems and poverty?

Intro

Different people hold varying beliefs about the reasons behind crime. Some opine that social issues and poverty are the root causes, while others argue that it results from an individual's inherent destructive nature. In this essay, I will discuss both views and present my perspective.

On one hand, specific individuals may possess innate characteristics that make them more susceptible to criminal activities. For instance, bullies who torment weaker individuals in school may be more predisposed to committing crimes later in life. Similarly, individuals who exhibit laziness, greed, or impulsiveness may resort to illegal activities instead of earning a lawful living. For example, young adults may be more likely to steal to get money quickly, especially if they have grown up in an environment where such behaviour is normalized.

On the other hand, social issues and poverty are also significant factors that contribute to the increase in crime. Young people who grow up around delinquents may be influenced to join their ranks. Furthermore, individuals who are financially struggling may feel compelled to commit crimes to provide for their families. When people do not have enough money to meet their basic needs, they may turn to crime as a last resort.

It is also worth noting that social issues and poverty can exacerbate an individual's innate tendencies toward criminal behaviour. For instance, a person with a naturally aggressive personality may be more likely to commit violent crimes if they live in an environment where violence is prevalent and accepted.

In conclusion, while some believe that bad innate qualities cause criminal tendencies, I think that social issues and poverty are the main culprits. However, it is essential to acknowledge that both factors can interact in complex ways and that addressing one without the other may not be sufficient in reducing crime rates.
